Digital platforms of work and the crafting of career path: the crowdworkers’ perspective

Research examining how crowdworkers use digital platforms in crafting and imagining career paths.

Abstract

This study takes a dynamic view of crowdwork and examines how workers’ careers develop over time. Using rich qualitative data and inductive analysis, it shows that crowdworkers actively craft a career path from digitally mediated work rather than simply moving through a static set of platform tasks.

Key findings

Crowdworkers do not experience platform work as a static exchange of tasks. They use changing skills, experience and platform opportunities to craft trajectories over time and build forms of career development.
