Institutionalising crowdwork as a mode of employment: The case of crowdworkers in Nigeria

A study of institutionalising crowdwork as a mode of employment through the experience of crowdworkers in Nigeria.

Abstract

This study examines how workers in Nigeria adopt crowdwork as a model of full-time and longer-term employment. It focuses on workers’ lived experience and the institutional conditions that shape the move from temporary digital tasks towards sustained employment.

Key findings

The study shows that workers can adopt crowdwork beyond the temporary-task model assumed by employers, using it as a more sustained form of employment in a context of serious unemployment and limited formal opportunities.
